Indonesia is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia encompassing 33 provinces and 1 Special Administrative Region. With a population of over 246.9 million, it is the world’s fourth most populous country. Indonesia consists of hundreds of distinct native ethnic and linguistic groups within which a shared identity has developed defined by a national language, ethnic diversity and religious pluralism within a majority Muslim population.

Prospectivity and Mining History

Indonesia has abundant natural resources. In the aftermath of World War II, the mining industry was virtually destroyed, a situation exacerbated by the nationalisation of all foreign enterprises in the mid-1950’s. However, in the mid-1960’s, changes were made to Indonesian law in order to encourage foreign investment. Since then, the country has experienced a major resurgence of mining activity.

Indonesia continues to be a major producer of ores and mineral resources extracting gold, silver, zinc, copper, lead, manganese, bauxite and iron ore amongst many others. Local and foreign companies are involved in mining and exploration activities throughout the country with the mining industry contributing significantly to the Indonesian economy.
